Softly in slippers
For me there’s something magical about slippers. Not the ones you wear at home, unless your super stylish and have pretty ones (unlike me!). But Italian Slippers, Venetian Slippers, Temple Slippers.
I dont know if its the word itself; Slipper, that sounds so inviting and elegant or if it was Elena Browers Washi Tape of sweetly coloured Temple Slippers that started my obsession. But here I am. Wearing them, painting them. Obsessed.
And I think that yes, they aren’t for everyone.
But isnt have style, having a twist of your own, isn’t that part of what makes us unique and interesting?
Its part of what I love about travel, local and OS, seeing other women’s sense of style. How they select their clothes and put them together based on the weather, the terrain, the topography of their city. I noticed in Japan, the ladies are so neat. It reminded me of Goldilocks, the way she took her time to select the right thing, getting it right is an art. Japanese ladies are very tidy and the local craftsmanship of things allows for that. For example I arrived at sale time, honestly did not know this, so I went into Takashiama and Diamaru and watched people shop. So interesting! The ladies werent rushed, they were thoughtful, purposeful and particular.
I noticed for example that the Japanese umbrellas are small, compact and come in cute colours. They fit perfectly into their tote bags & there was hundreds to choose from. The range of hats was staggering, from cute slouchy beanies to rain hats. Then over to handkerchiefs, so many designs that were so artful. Not your standard ladies tiny kerchief you might find somewhere in David Jones collecting dust. And yes you might pay more than you’d expect, but these items look like they are designed to last a lifetime.
Here down under I feel like we are going through a vanilla phase of life. Cars are all the same colours, there’s no more pink, Ferrari Red, Sky Blue? Shops are full of neutrals, and ‘one size fits none’ clothes. Its gotten so lazy, so commercial, as this is all so profitable.
So I take your attention back to slippers! Why? Because its an example or reminder of an element of style. And yes it neednt be slippers, its just that’s my example of what it might be.
Can we return to having fun with style? With fashion? Bringing in a little whimsy? A little moment to think about what your style is?
What’s your thing?
Do you have a thing?
I mean do you have a signature thing you weave into your outfits?
It might be the way you always have a cute scarf on your person? eg tied on your handbag, in your hair, around your neck, around your waist as a belt.
It might be the way you love Green handbags? You’ve got a leather tote, a clutch, a cross body bag you bought at a vintage market.
What about your collection of Red lipsticks? A soft red balm for day time, an orange red for nights out in the city, a red that matches perfectly that great dress.
Thoughts on how you wear your hair? Always a different style, up one day, down the next, side tie next week.
If you dont yet, maybe think what might it be? Experiment. Have fun! I dare you.
